1897 - "Smoking is not allowed here"
Some interesting smoking facts I've gathered: Tobacco was first used in the Americas, and Columbus scouts first reported tobacco use in Cuba, stating: "...men with half-burned wood in their hands and certain herbs to take their smokes, which are some dry herbs put in a certain leaf, also dry, like those the boys make on the day of the Passover of the Holy Ghost; and having lighted one part of it, by the other they suck, absorb, or receive that smoke inside with the breath, by which they become benumbed and almost drunk, and so it is said they do not feel fatigue. These, muskets as we will call them, they call tabacos. I knew Spaniards on this island of Española who were accustomed to take it, and being reprimanded for it, by telling them it was a vice, they replied they were unable to cease using it. I do not know what relish or benefit they found in it." * Tobacco was first introduced in Euroupe in about 1518. * In 1608 the first successful crop was grown at the Jamestown settlement. * By 1620 it had become a widely traded commercial product. * The US Government first taxed tobacco in 1883. *In the 18th century, tobacco enema was the primary treatment to resuscitate victims of drowning. * 1830 saw the first anti-smoking movement, in concurrence with the temperence movement. In 1832 the cigarette was first invented by Egyptian artillery men. They improved the rate of cannon fire by rolling the gunpowder in paper tubes. The crew was rewarded with a pound of tobacco. Their only pipe was broken so they took to rolling the cigarettes in the paper tubes. * The first manufactured cigarettes appeared in the US in 1860, with Bull Durham being the leading brand with 90% of the market. * 1861-1865 during the civil war, tobacco was given out as rations to both Union and Confederate troops. This was the first time many northerners encountered tobacco. * By 1901 43 out of 45 states had strong anti-cigarette activities. * TV cigarette ads were banned in the US in 1971.
