1910s - Adoree Villany in the Dance of Apis - Adoree Villany first came to notoriety for her "Dance of the Seven Veils" in 1905; she was tried for obscenity in Munich in 1911-12, for her dancing "without clothing." She also published a book, Tanz-Reform und Pseudo-Moral, setting forth her philosophy of modern dance.
In 1913 Villany held programs claiming to "trace the history of Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria in a dance that included a Salome (dance of Herod)". Read more on Villany and her trial in a old NY Times article here.
