I got lucky on this one, this stereo was in great condition.  You can still see a little fading on  his back, but I got most of it pretty easily.  I’m not totally happy with the grain right under his hand, but I think I’ve stared at this one enough for one night.

1906 – San Francisco Demolitions, Wiggle Fail

1906 - Dynamiting dangerous walls on Market St., after the fire, San Francisco Disaster, U.S.A.

There are so many great images I pass up because of warping and fading.  You hear me complain about that a lot, this one is a good example.   The buildings on the left are warped, and it’s a bit stretched and uneven.  The flashing is from areas that have faded out over time, and would have to be evened out to really make it a good animation – and still, it’s hard to get them all.  To fix this image enough to make it passable, no coloring or extra animation, would take 2-4 hours.  I was layering it up and thought this would be a good picture to explain that.

For those of you that don’t know, this is a photo taken after the great quake in San Francisco in 1906.   It was around 7.9 magnitude, and 3,000 were estimated dead.  There are some great pictures out there, especially panoramas, that detail this disaster.  Check out the wiki page here.

1904 – Willie “The Terrible”, Wiggle

5 sections on the geese were cut out for movement here.  Then they were cut out again in the reflections and lined up to match the animation on the top.  Then my brain exploded.

I would have liked to animate the ducks to the left, but the wiggle is so strong there I don’t think it would have been very realistic.

One of the problems that comes with animating between two panels is the likelihood of these animations turning out looking like cut out dolls.  Monty Python comes to mind.  So I made this image to practice integrating more fluid movement between the two panels.  So movement in the mouth becomes more realistic with movement of the cheeks.  The eyes were challenging because the light being reflected in her eyes, if not altered between frames, just looks like a big… oh gawd I’m going to say it… eyesore.  Literally like a bump on the eye.  Not pretty, and one of the reasons I chose her was her beautiful eyes.

Have a great weekend everyone, I should have another up Friday or Saturday evening.

I finally got it down to two repeating background frames.  This stereo was in excellent condition, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been able to pull it off.  They tend to get large faded and darkened areas, which I have to mask out in order to eliminate the flashy effect it creates.  With this one I had maybe 10-12 level adjustment layers, that’s about 1/4 of what I usually have.  This image is a total of 8 frames, I lost count of how many layers after I hit 70.  It took about 6 hours total to create.

There was a lot of great detail lost when I shrunk this image down.  There is a cross at the top of the well (colored in bright blue), as well as writing down the side.  View the original image here.

This is pretty cool, from the AP:

ALBANY, N.Y. – Years before leading his vastly outnumbered troops to their doom at Little Bighorn, a young George Armstrong Custer was described as accurate in math.

Nearly 30 years before his March to the Sea laid waste to a large swath of Georgia, William Tecumseh Sherman was deemed a “fine energetic boy.”

And two decades before he would earn the nickname “Stonewall,” Thomas J. Jackson’s dreams of a military career got a boost from a man who would help start the Civil War.

Those are some of the tidbits gleaned from more than 115,000 U.S. Military Academy application documents being posted online for the first time by Ancestry.com. The Provo, Utah-based genealogy website said Tuesday that the information can be viewed for free starting Thursday — Veterans Day — through Sunday.

After Sunday, it will cost $12.95 a month for unlimited access to the West Point records and the website’s more than 100 million military documents, company officials said.

I learned a lot creating this image.  Getting water right has been a challenge.  I used two different techniques on the water.  The bottom area is a repeating pattern, the top is just a bit of semi-transparent movement in 3 areas.  Besides the wiggle and water, there are three animated elements in this image, can you find them?

This is the same girl on the moon as in my ‘how are these created’ post below, just a different pose.  This is my first time attempting a falling pattern, can’t wait to try it out on a waterfall!
